MENTORE ends with great successs

MENTORE successfully ended during the ITS World Congress hold in Stockholm from 21 to 25 September 2009. Major information and results about the project were widely spread during the five days event at the European Commission and TTS Italia booths.

The Congress’ delegates were treated to two live demonstrations of EGNOS tracking & tracing services:

  • Two vehicles equipped with the MENTORE EGNOS-GPRS/Satellite communication OBU while transporting nuclear material in Italy
  • An EcoVan, equipped with the MENTORE EGNOS-GPRS/WiFi OBU was tracked while circulating for freight distribution in the city of Stockholm.

The services make use of the EGNOS data distributed by EDAS (EGNOS Data Access System), and processed in the Telespazio Service Platform in Rome, and visualised on a screen at the TTS Italia booth.

Results demonstrated once more that the MENTORE solution, using EGNOS Commercial Service, provides position guarantee and enhanced availability. Moreover the use of EDAS represents a final important achievement for the project.

MENTORE results attracted the attention of many experts as well as of high level public authorities. Italy’s deputy minister of transport, Roberto Castelli, visited the TTS Italia booth and met MENTORE project coordinator and GSA project officer. MENTORE promotion during the Stockholm congress culminated with a presentation in the frame of the session entitled “Use of ITS technologies in and for all modes of transport”. By making reference to the outcomes of the project’s pilots and trials, the presentation highlighted the opportunities and applications of EGNOS and Galileo in the ITS sector, especially to support the real-time tracking of dangerous materials and green logistics.
