IMG_0847The 16th International Road Federation World Meeting, which was held in Lisbon from 25 to 28 May 2010, attracted about 1.500 participants and saw the interventions of numerous stakeholders, as well as a number of eminent keynote speakers. This key road sector event, jointly organised by the European Union Road Federation (ERF), the Centro Rodoviário Português (CRP) and the International Road Federation (IRF), carried the title “Sharing the Road”.

The conference, which was divided in five thematic sessions (Mobility, Transport & Infrastructure / Road Safety & Security / Sustainable Roads / Road Finances & Management / Techniques & Innovations), succeeded in bringing together the top decision makers in the sector to debate the hottest issues and offer ideas over the role of the road infrastructure sector in the years to come.

The numerous participants also had the opportunity to enjoy the exhibition area hosting 80 exhibitors coming from all over the world.

The IRF World Meeting demonstrated “once again, that Roads are a vector of exchange and development, creating both wealth and growth” as stated by Jean Claude Roffé, Chairman of the Technical and Steering Committees. Mobility is challenged on several fronts, requiring holistic approaches and new forms of partnership between public authorities and the road industry. This message also applies to transition economies, where the majority of road infrastructure programmes are currently taking place.

During the closing ceremony, Christophe Nicodème, Director General of the ERF, expressed his gratitude to all parties for making this event such a huge success. In his concluding words, he stated “Sharing the road means much more than just sharing the actual road infrastructure. It implies the need to share and exchange experiences, knowledge, skills and best practices and I am convinced that this meeting provided us all with a unique opportunity to do just that”.
